The explorations in Daisy's Diner continue. The children have been working hard on cooking and using different materials to do so. The next several pictures were of the children measuring and mixing ingredients to make their own paint. They have been focusing on measuring and following recipes to make different things. After they made their paint, they painted some pictures using their very own homemade paint.
In these pictures, the children were making homemade smoothies. They got to pick the fruits they were going to use. They also cleaned and cut the fruits to make them ready to put into the blender. After the fruit was in the blender, they got to control the blender and watch their smoothies until the desired consistency was reached. When this was done, they of course got to taste them - they unanimously gave them a thumbs up!!
The children have not only used our Daisy's Diner, their explorations have extended to the big kitchen in our school. The next several pictures show the process of the children preparing to make a vegetable soup. The week before they made a chart to determine what type of vegetables they were going to use. They have not only been working on measuring and following recipes, but also planning what to make and how to make it. They washed their hands, washed the vegetables, got the utensils and kitchen appliances necessary to make their soup. When their soup was finished, they were able to eat it. 99% of the children loved it. One child even said, "I have to give my mom this recipe!" After the children were done eating, they then used their skills to serve some of the teachers and parents in the building.
This is another extension of the children using math measurements to make homemade Kool-Aid play-doh. If anyone is interested you can have a copy of the recipe so you can make some at home.
The children have continued to show a strong interest in animals, so we have added some classroom pets for us to take care of and observe. We now have two frogs, one lizard and five hermit crabs. We observe them daily, feed them, spray them and take care of them. We even draw pictures of them.
The children have always had an interest in building, so they continue to have many opportunities to do so. They have continued to build zoos for animals, tracks for cars and recently have really been interested in building spaceships. They are very creative and it is very fun to watch what they invent.
The children have been working on investigating things that sink and float and this has led to the process of them trying to construct a boat that will float. They have brainstormed items that they will need and have started gathering materials. They were hard at work during their first try at creating a boat. We will continue this process and hopefully have a boat that they will be able to show you during our Exhibit Night.
Below are pictures of the children experimenting with paint. They are using a picture of a flower as a provocation to inspire them. They focus on colors and details and decide what type of brush is needed to make certain brush strokes.
In this next section, the children are using fruit as provocation to inspire them to try to replicate the details of the fruit that they see. They first chose colors they needed and then a wide variety of different brushes to paint with. They also used markers to first draw a sketch of the fruit.
The children are using real fruit and many brushes to try to make different textures that they see on the fruit. They are getting very detailed when painting pictures. At times they have 'free paint' and other times they are given an object that we have been talking about to inspire them.
The children have also been interested in dramatic play. Here they are painting a puppet theater. They chose the colors and different brushes to use. They will then be working on creating and performing a puppet show.
Finger painting to music. They got to choose what type of painting they would like to do on our Fun Friday, and they chose finger painting. One child said, "I could do this all day!"
Guest readers are always a big hit in our room. The children really enjoy having people come in to read to them. This week we had Olivia's dad, Jude's dad, Serafine's mom and Ms. Kristen.
Since the children have been very interested in zoos, they decided to make a zoo by first drawing maps of what they would want their zoos to look like. In one picture you can see several 'hearts', this is where first aid stations would be located in the zoo.
These pictures tie into their explorations with animals, zoos and different habitats. They have really enjoyed playing with water animals and discussing the differences between them. They really have great artistic abilities.
We have started doing some exploring of seeds and where they come from. We also took a walk to our school's garden to see what it looked like this time of year. "The fruits and vegetables are gone!" One child quickly noticed. We will continue to work in our garden and plant some seeds of our own.
The following are various pictures that were taken throughout the week. The children are always so engaged and are so creative.
