February Happenings - Cooking & Baking

The children have always shown an interest in Daisy's Diner and the process of cooking.  This semester the children have been starting to explore different aspects of cooking and/or baking.

These pictures demonstrate the process of the children making cookies.  They followed a recipe and ended up with some delicious cookies.

These pictures are from the children making
Kool-Aid Play-Doh by following a recipe.

The children decided to make Mr. Sean and Mr. Paul a pancake breakfast because they always prepare our snacks.  We once again reviewed following a recipe,
setting the tables and then presenting our food.

This was another practice run of how it would be to actually make cookies.  They used cut out construction paper and decorated their cookies with a variety of art supplies.  They then placed them on a baking sheet and put them in our Daisy's Diner oven.  They watched a timer and took the cookies out when they were done.

February Happenings - Music and Art

This month we have done a lot with music and art together.  We have painted 'community' pictures by painting to Musical Chairs.  We have also had music on in the background when they are painting their own paintings and/or drawings.  We have discussed how music is all around us and how we feel while listening to music.

The children were exploring with watercolors and using different objects to
paint with.  They did this while enjoying some music in the background.

The next few pictures shows the children interpreting a still life
of a bouquet of flowers.  They have been focusing on colors and
how to make certain marks on their paper.

Here is a sample of how the children were drawing a person, but they did so by adding onto each other's picture.  When the music was on, they were drawing, when the music stopped, they froze and then rotated on to their friends artwork.  They worked together very nice.

The same 'musical chairs' process was done, only this time they were collectively painting rainbows.  Each child started with one certain paint color and they had that paint color the entire time.   The rainbow was complete when they ended on their original piece of art.

Here the children were working on using chalk to represent
the texture of a still life pineapple.  They had great focus and
each had a different technique and outcome.

February Happenings - Water Exploration

The children continue to show an interest in playing and exploring in water.  They have done some fun investigations regarding the movement of water and how to work collaboratively to get water to move in certain directions.  They have also explored and have tried to figure out why some things sink and why some things float.

They were trying to figure out a way to make floating
things sink and sinking things to start floating.

Jason and Maddy were exploring sinking and floating objects.

"I have to get more water to make it go up.
Maybe I need a refill."  Andrew M.

Norah, Sully and Andrew worked together to fill the tube with water and
then tried to figure out how to catch the water on the other side in a cup.
"Tip up the ketchup bottle and sqeeze."- Sully  With Sully's suggestions,
Norah and Andrew were able to get the water moving.

"It's moving!" Trent

February Happenings - Animals

We have had a lot of discussions lately about animals.  The children have been very curious and creative with the different explorations that we have done.  I hope you enjoy looking at the pictures.

The children were working collaboratively
to build a zoo.  They first separated the
animals to put them into groups.
The children were building mountains
for the land animals.

These were water animals.  The animals on the
sides are both land and water animals.  "Seals live under
the ice.  They have big tusks to break the ice open in case they
need to breath."  Mac

This was the beginning of a gorilla habitat.

This is a dinosaur habitat.  "We're building a house
for dinosaurs.  It's only for dinosaurs."  Addy

Jude worked hard to build a dinosaur
habitat in the sand table using natural materials.

This is a picture of an owl.  "He lives in a tree at night.
He's awake at night and asleep at the day." Norah H.

February Happenings - Daisy's Diner

Daisy's Diner has moved!  It's new location is in our old 'library'.  The children thought this would be a good and new spot for our Daisy's Diner.  The children thoroughly enjoy playing in the diner daily.  They are really beginning to explore many different avenues with having a restaurant.
